Mass Stabilized Improved Projectile
The MilTech MSIP shotgun round was designed as a shotgun round that duplicated the standard buckshot load in all respects except range. The round features 25 mass/drag stabilized flechettes having a lead or tungsten tip and a polymer tail section. A special sabot holds the projectiles together until 1 meter from the muzzle so that the expelled propellant gasses do not upset their flight. As a result, the pattern of projectiles remains dense, only 5m at 100m range, insuring a high likelihood of multiple target hits.
Miltech has abandoned production of MSIP in favor of the more lethal SCMITR, but has licensed the design to several other manufacturers. At least one maker, Marder Repeating Arms, is producing a variant ustilizing depleated uranium in place of lead. This variant has improved lethality, armor penetration and is pyrophoric.
