The silent grenade projector is typical of the many clandestine weapons employed by SolSec operations. The weapon is built on the 'bullpup' layout, with the receiver concealed within the stock of the weapon. The grenade projector fires a special 20mm, silent launch grenade. A collapsed metal 'balloon' holds a fairly conventional propellant charge. When the round is fired, the propellant rapidly deflagrates, expanding the metal balloon and propelling the grenade at approximately 100 meters/second. The balloon traps the sound, flash and propellant gases, making the weapon virtually silent.
The grenade is of the combination type, with a shaped charge for penetration and fitted with an annular fragmentation sleeve for good antipersonnel effectiveness. Typically, a 5-round tubular magazine is fitted beneath the barrel. A second tube, appearing to be another magazine, is actually storage for spent rounds. On firing, the empty cartridge is ejected from the chamber and then fed into the spent round store as part of the reloading cycle.
The comparatively large (for a smallarm) shaped charge is capable of penetrating all known body armor, as well as thin skinned vehicles. The ammunition is coated with a black polymer finish and has no marks of any kind.
